Gear That Survives Kenya
Riding in Kenya isn't like riding in Europe. You'll face 35°C heat on the coast, red dust that penetrates everything, tropical downpours that arrive without warning, and roads that range from smooth tarmac to rocky riverbeds. Your gear needs to handle all of it.
Helmet: Non-Negotiable
We provide LS2 adventure helmets with every rental — full-face with a flip-up visor and built-in sun shield. If you're bringing your own, choose:
- Full-face or adventure style (not open-face — the dust will destroy you)
- Good ventilation (Kenya is hot, even at altitude)
- Anti-fog visor (morning rides through highland mist)
- Light colors (dark helmets absorb heat)
Jacket: Breathability is King
Forget your leather touring jacket. In Kenya, you need:
- Mesh panels for airflow on coastal rides
- Removable waterproof liner for surprise rain
- CE armor at shoulders, elbows, and back
- High-visibility elements for dusk riding
We stock and rent the Alpinestars T-GP Plus R V4 — a proven choice for tropical adventure riding. Light, armored, and breathable.
Gloves: Grip + Protection
Your hands take the most abuse on dusty trails. Look for:
- Short-cuff adventure gloves (long cuffs trap heat)
- Knuckle protection (gravel roads are unforgiving)
- Touchscreen-compatible fingertips (for GPS/phone)
- Breathable mesh back (your palms will sweat regardless)
Boots: Ankle Support Saves Careers
The most common motorcycle injury in Kenya? Ankle fractures from dropping the bike on loose gravel. Proper boots are essential:
- Over-ankle height (minimum)
- Oil-resistant sole (petrol station floors are slippery)
- Reinforced toe and heel
- Walkable (you'll explore on foot too)
Pants: The Forgotten Essential
Many riders skip proper pants in the heat. Don't. At minimum:
- Riding jeans with Kevlar lining (cooler than textile pants)
- Knee armor (removable for walking around)
- Stretch panels for comfort on long days
